Melton Mowbray, Market town in Leicestershire, England.
Melton Mowbray is a market town in Leicestershire between Leicester and Nottingham along the River Eye. The buildings are mostly stone-built, and the townscape sits within the gently rolling countryside of the surrounding area.
The settlement appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Medeltone with around 200 inhabitants. The Mowbray suffix came from the Norman lords who held the manor during the medieval period.
The town is home to one of only six licensed producers of Stilton cheese in England. Its pork pies also carry European Protected Geographical Status, reflecting the local food traditions that define the area.
The town has an active cattle market that serves as a trading center for farmers and dealers in the region. Visitors can walk around the center easily, and the main streets are close together.
The Church of St Mary from the late 13th century has double transept aisles, a feature rarely seen in medieval parish churches in England. This arrangement gives the interior an unusual spatial quality.
