Jesus College, College in Cambridge, England
Jesus College is a college of the University of Cambridge located on spacious grounds with medieval buildings, modern facilities, sports fields, and gardens. The site combines historic structures with contemporary residence halls and academic spaces spread across the campus.
The college was founded in 1496 by John Alcock, then Bishop of Ely, on the site of a former Benedictine nunnery. The transformation of the religious foundation into an academic college marked a major shift in the use of the medieval structures.
The chapel maintains two separate choirs that sing during services throughout the academic terms. This tradition takes place in the oldest university building still in use at Cambridge and draws visitors to choir rehearsals and evensongs.
The college grounds are partly open to visitors, with some buildings and courtyards available to explore outside examination periods. The gardens and sports facilities remain generally reserved for students and staff members.
Sonita Alleyne became the first black head of any college at Oxford or Cambridge in 2019 and simultaneously the first female master of this college. Her appointment set a precedent in the centuries-long history of both universities.
