Chatham Dockyard, Royal Navy Dockyard in Chatham, England.
Chatham Dockyard is a former Royal Navy facility in Medway, England, spreading across 160 hectares along the River Medway. The site holds historic warehouses, workshops, and three preserved warships representing different eras of naval service.
The yard began in 1567 under Elizabeth I and built more than 500 ships for the British navy over four centuries. In 1984, operations ceased as a naval base and the site later opened to visitors as a museum.
The Ropewalk produces cordage using 18th-century methods, with craftspeople applying the tools and techniques that once supplied the royal fleet. Visitors watch as long hemp fibers turn into sturdy rope, just as they did during the age of sail.
A tour covers ten exhibition spaces, ships, and industrial buildings distributed across several areas of the grounds. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as distances between buildings are long and some surfaces uneven.
Archaeological finds from old wrecks and workshops show the shift from wooden shipbuilding to steel construction in the British fleet. Visitors see original components documenting how technologies changed over centuries.
