Dover, Parliamentary constituency in the United Kingdom, 1885-2024

Dover is a constituency of the House of Commons in the southeast of England, covering the coastal town of the same name, nearby villages, and inland rural areas. It stretches from the famous white cliffs along the coast to quieter countryside further inland, and includes both the busy port area and smaller settlements.

Dover was a key point on the coast in Roman times and later became one of the Cinque Ports, a group of medieval coastal towns that held special rights in exchange for providing ships to the crown. Over the following centuries, political reforms and shifts in sea trade shaped the constituency as it exists today.

The name Dover comes from an Old English word meaning water or river, pointing to the town's long ties to the sea. Anyone walking along the harbor today sees ferries and fishing boats moving in and out, with people gathering at the docks to watch the ships pass.

The town of Dover sits at the heart of the constituency and is easy to reach by road or bus, with ferry connections to the European continent departing from its port. The coastal weather can be windy at any time of year, so warmer months tend to offer the most comfortable conditions for exploring the area.

In the 19th century, elections in Dover were known for disorder, with voters sometimes bribed or pressured and physical fights breaking out near polling places. These practices only ended after a series of reform laws changed how elections were run across Britain.
