Divis Tower, Residential tower in Falls Road, Belfast, Northern Ireland
Divis Tower is a residential structure in Belfast's Falls Road area that rises nineteen floors and contains ninety-six concrete apartments. The building reaches two hundred feet (61 m) in height and continues to mark the skyline of the western neighborhood.
Construction began in the late Sixties and opened during a period of political unrest in Northern Ireland. Military presence lasted several decades and ended only in two thousand five when the army withdrew from the roof.
The tower takes its name from the Divis area and became a symbol of division in the city during the Seventies. Today it houses families and forms part of everyday life along the Falls Road community.
The tower sits in western Belfast and can be seen from most points along Falls Road. The building is residential only and has no public access to its upper floors.
Helicopters once ferried soldiers to the roof and were the sole means of reaching the military station above. Eight additional apartments were created in these formerly closed floors after the troops departed.
