Longwood trolleybus turntable, Public transit turntable structure in Longwood, Huddersfield, England.
Longwood trolleybus turntable was a rotating platform at the foot of Dod-Lea Lane where trolleybuses could manually change direction through rotation. The structure allowed operators to turn vehicles precisely and access different routes.
The facility began operations in September 1939 but had to close shortly after due to wartime conditions. It remained in place for decades before being dismantled in 1985.
The site shows how Huddersfield modernized its public transit by replacing trams with trolleybuses. Visitors can still see today how this transition technology shaped the town.
The site is located on Dod-Lea Lane in Longwood and is no longer visible today since the structure was removed years ago. To learn about this facility's history, visiting the Huddersfield Industrial Heritage Trust can be helpful.
This site was one of only four trolleybus turntables worldwide, with two in Britain and two on the continent. This rarity makes it a remarkable example of a nearly forgotten transport technology.
