Hillsborough Castle, Georgian mansion in Royal Hillsborough, Northern Ireland
Hillsborough Castle is a residence in Royal Hillsborough, Northern Ireland, featuring several reception rooms and formal halls in the Georgian style. The estate also includes an 18th-century walled garden, along with woodland areas and landscaped grounds.
The British government acquired the building in 1922 from the seventh Marquess of Downshire to establish an official residence in Northern Ireland. Since then, it has served as a seat of authority and venue for diplomatic visits and state occasions.
The name recalls the Hill family, who acquired the estate in the 17th century and shaped the local place name. Visitors today still see the original reception rooms where official gatherings take place, furnished with pieces from different periods.
Tours are usually available only through guided visits that lead through the interior rooms and the grounds. Walkers can also explore the woodland paths and the walled garden independently when open to the public.
The grounds hold trees planted by notable figures, including one from 1925 by the first governor of Northern Ireland. Each tree marks a specific visit or official event, forming a living record of encounters over time.
