Loughborough University, Public university in Loughborough, England
Loughborough University is a higher education institution in the town of Loughborough in the East Midlands of England, covering a large site with lecture halls, residential blocks and research centers. The nine academic schools are spread across several modern buildings with libraries and technical workshops.
The institution began in 1909 as a technical college offering practical training for local industry. The royal charter of 1966 transformed it into a full university with expanded degree programs.
The campus hosts one of the largest student sports organizations in the country with clubs for more than 50 disciplines. Many national teams use the training facilities during their preparation for international competitions.
Public areas such as the library and sports center are usually quieter in the morning than in the afternoon during term time. Main pathways across the campus are flat and well surfaced for pedestrians and cyclists.
A small canal runs through the site and separates the academic buildings from the residential areas. The institution operates its own railway station with direct connections to London.
