Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, Military academy in Woolwich, England
The Royal Military Academy was an officer training school at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich, comprising classrooms, residential quarters, and training facilities across extensive grounds. The buildings feature Gothic architectural details and are arranged around the open spaces used for drills and exercises.
The academy was founded in 1741 to train officers for the Artillery and Engineers, becoming Britain's leading technical military school for over two centuries. It closed in 1945 when operations merged with the national officer training institution at Sandhurst.
The institution pioneered a new form of military education in Britain, teaching engineering and science disciplines that were uncommon in other schools of its time. The grounds where officers studied and trained remain recognizable through their institutional layout.
The former military grounds were redeveloped in 2008 into residential properties, now containing private homes and rental units in the Woolwich area. Some areas of the site remain restricted, but parts are accessible to visitors during daylight hours.
The grounds feature a restored cricket pitch prepared to county match standards and maintained through a partnership with Blackheath Cricket Club. The field remains in active use for community and competitive play today.
