Ogmore Castle, Medieval castle ruins in St Bride's Major, Wales.
Ogmore Castle is a ruined Norman castle in St Bride's Major, Wales, sitting close to the River Ewenny. The remains include a rectangular keep and sections of defensive walls that still stand to a considerable height.
William of London built the castle in 1116 as part of the Norman push to control southern Wales after the conquest. Over the following centuries it was expanded and altered before falling into disuse.
The stepping stones crossing the River Ewenny near the castle are a rare medieval feature still in use today. They connect the ruins to the opposite bank and remain part of the everyday landscape around the site.
The site is freely accessible and has information panels that explain the main structures, along with paths that guide visitors through the ruins. Footwear with good grip is advisable since the ground is uneven and can be very wet after rain.
The moat surrounding the castle is tidal, meaning it fills and empties depending on the level of the River Ewenny. At certain times of day the ruins appear surrounded by water, while at others the moat is almost dry.
