Britannia Royal Naval College, Naval academy in Dartmouth, England
Britannia Royal Naval College is a naval academy and military base in Dartmouth, England, perched on a hill above the River Dart. The main building in Baroque style with its striking facade and towers rises above parklike grounds and offers views of the harbor and river mouth.
Training originally began in 1863 on two wooden hulks in the river before moving ashore. The current buildings were opened under King Edward VII in 1905 and replaced the floating facilities.
The name comes from the former royal yacht and underlines the close link to the Crown. British naval cadets wear historical uniforms here and take part in ceremonies based on centuries-old traditions.
Guided tours show visitors the chapel, deck, parade ground, and museum with maritime exhibits. Access is limited because the site remains an active military training facility, so visitors should check in advance for visiting times.
Prince Philip completed his training here and later returned as head of the college, an unusual return for a graduate. The complex served as a hospital during both World Wars and housed wounded soldiers in addition to cadets.
