Hidcote Manor Garden, Arts and Crafts garden in Hidcote Bartrim, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom
Hidcote Manor Garden is a garden in Hidcote Bartrim, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom, made up of a series of outdoor rooms separated by hedges. Paths connect these rooms and lead through areas with different plant combinations and color schemes.
The garden began in 1907 on open farmland when Lawrence Johnston started transforming the site into structured rooms. The National Trust took over the property in 1947 and opened it to visitors.
The grounds show how the Arts and Crafts movement saw gardens as extensions of living space, with each room having its own mood and planting scheme. Visitors experience this philosophy most clearly in the Red Borders area, where warm flower tones and dark foliage work together.
The best time to visit is between May and September when plants show their full development. The walking route leads through all garden areas and allows you to experience the different plantings in sequence.
Several plant varieties carry the name of this place, including Lavandula angustifolia Hidcote, a narrow-leaved lavender. This variety was bred here and is now found in gardens worldwide.
