Llantarnam Abbey, Cistercian abbey and Grade II* listed building in Llantarnam, Wales
The stone abbey structure combines Tudor Revival and Jacobean architectural elements, featuring medieval foundations beneath its current configuration at 31 meters elevation.
Founded in 1179 by Hywel ab Ioerwerth with support from Strata Florida, the abbey maintained sixty monks before facing decline after the 1316 Llywelyn Bren revolt.
The monastery transformed into a center for the Sisters of Saint Joseph in 1946, continuing religious traditions through their Ty Croeso Centre activities.
Archaeological excavations across the grounds reveal the original church foundations and medieval cloister, providing insights into Welsh monastic architecture.
Between 1834 and 1835, Reginald Blewitt reconstructed the building in Tudor Revival style, leading to such financial strain that he left the estate for 17 years.
