Lydden Hill Race Circuit, Racing circuit in Kent, England
Lydden Hill Race Circuit is a racing venue in Kent that spans approximately one mile and combines both tarmac and gravel sections in its layout. The track hosts a variety of motorsport events including rallycross, drifting, and motorcycle competitions on a regular basis.
Bill Chesson established the circuit in 1955, beginning with stock-car racing before adding a tarmac track for road racing in 1962. This expansion transformed the venue into a versatile racing facility capable of hosting multiple motorsport disciplines.
The circuit holds a special place in motorsport history as the birthplace of rallycross racing in 1967. This moment established the venue as a landmark for an entirely new form of competition that continues to draw enthusiasts today.
The venue sits conveniently between Canterbury and Dover, making it accessible from either direction. It is helpful to check the event calendar in advance to plan your visit around the competitions you wish to see.
James Hunt, who later became Formula 1 world champion, secured his first racing victory here in 1968 while driving a Formula Ford. This early success marked the beginning of a career that would lead him to the highest level of motorsport.
