Ranelagh Gardens, Public garden in Chelsea, England
Ranelagh Gardens is a public park in Chelsea featuring winding paths between trees and flower beds. The grounds open onto lawns with views toward the River Thames and the nearby Chelsea Hospital.
The garden began in 1742 as an entertainment venue with a large rotunda at its heart. Over the decades, it gradually lost its role as a gathering place for wealthy society and became a public green space.
The name comes from an Irish viscount whose country house once occupied this land. Today, people gather on the open lawns to sit and watch the seasons change throughout the year.
The park is open daily to foot traffic with several entry points from the surrounding streets. In May, the grounds become the home of the Chelsea Flower Show, closing to general visitors during the event.
The young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart performed here as a child, playing before wealthy audiences. This musical heritage made the place a known venue for performances during the 1700s.
