Northfleet, town in the Borough of Gravesham in Kent, England
Northfleet is a town in Kent in southeast England and part of Gravesham Borough. It sits just west of Gravesend on the border with Dartford and has a railway station with direct connections to London and other cities, making it a key transport hub for the region.
Romans settled along the Ebbsfleet and called the area Vagniacae, using the river for water and transport. In the early modern period, Northfleet became known for steamboat trips to London that brought visitors to the area, leading to the creation of the famous Rosherville Gardens pleasure park in the 1830s.
The name Northfleet comes from its location on the north part of what was once called the River Fleet, now the Ebbsfleet River. This naming reflects how people understood their place in relation to the water that shaped settlement patterns and continues to define local identity today.
Northfleet's railway station is located near the town center and offers straightforward travel to other towns in the region. The nearby Ebbsfleet International station is also accessible, though walking between the two can be tricky due to roads and street layouts.
Northfleet was once famous for Rosherville Gardens, a pleasure park with Greek temples, a theater, and evening fireworks that drew thousands of visitors weekly. This Victorian park is considered one of the pioneering amusement parks in British history, though few original structures remain today.
