Another Place, Installation artwork at Crosby Beach, England
Another Place consists of one hundred cast iron figures spread across three kilometers of beach, each measuring around 1.9 meters tall. The sculptures stand at different distances from one another, some close to the shore, others further out in the sand and regularly covered by the tides.
The works were created between 1997 and 2003 for temporary exhibitions at different European coastlines. After several years traveling, they received their permanent location at Crosby Beach in 2005.
The figures carry the body measurements of artist Antony Gormley and stand facing the horizon. At high tide some disappear beneath the water while others remain visible, making the relationship between human and sea tangible.
The beach remains freely accessible at all times and the best moment to visit is at low tide, when you can walk between the figures. Weather conditions change quickly and warm clothing is advisable, as the wind from the sea often blows strongly.
Marine life has settled on the surface of the iron and creates natural patterns of shells, seaweed and barnacles. Each figure thus develops its own appearance over time, changing with the seasons and currents.
