Maesteg, town and community in Bridgend County Borough, Wales, UK
Maesteg is a town in Bridgend County Borough, Wales, set in a narrow valley flanked by wooded hillsides. The main shopping street runs through the center, with residential streets climbing up the slopes on either side.
Maesteg grew quickly in the 19th century as coal mining took hold across the valley, drawing workers and shaping the town's layout. When the mines closed through the 20th century, the town had to find a new direction.
The name Maesteg comes from Welsh and means roughly "fair field," a contrast to the industrial past that shaped most of what visitors see today. The town hall, built in the late 19th century, still stands on the main street and gives a sense of how civic life was organized during the coal era.
The town center is easy to walk, as most shops and services line the flat main street. If you plan to explore the hills above, wear sturdy shoes since the paths rise steeply quite quickly.
Before mining took over, a windmill on one of the hills above the town was used to process grain, and its tower still stands as a protected structure. It is visible from parts of the valley below if you know where to look.
