Cass Sculpture Foundation, Sculpture garden and museum in Goodwood, West Sussex, Great Britain
The Cass Sculpture Foundation is a sculpture garden and museum in Goodwood, West Sussex, where large-scale works are displayed across outdoor grounds and indoor galleries. The pieces are spread through a wooded parkland setting, each placed in direct relation to the surrounding trees and open land.
The foundation opened in 1992 and over the years commissioned around 400 contemporary sculptures, with artists such as Anthony Caro and Andy Goldsworthy among those who contributed. It closed in 2020 after nearly three decades of operation.
Many of the works on display were commissioned specifically for the outdoor grounds, so each piece was made with this particular setting in mind. Visitors can see how artists responded to the light, the trees, and the open land around them.
The site has marked paths through the parkland and toward the indoor spaces, but the ground can be uneven in places, so sturdy footwear is a good idea. The weather in West Sussex can change quickly, so it is worth bringing an extra layer.
Unlike most public art institutions, all money from sculpture sales went directly to the artists rather than to the foundation itself. This model allowed contemporary sculptors to earn a living from large commissioned works that would otherwise have been difficult to fund.
