Superlambanana, Public sculpture in Liverpool, England
Superlambanana is a sculpture in Liverpool that fuses two distinct forms into one: a sheep and a tropical fruit. The yellow concrete and fibreglass construction stands roughly 5 meters tall and sits outside the Avril Robarts Library at John Moores University.
Japanese artist Taro Chiezo created the work for the 1998 ArtTransPennine Exhibition, which aimed to establish an artistic passage through northern England. The piece remained at its site after the show and became a permanent part of the city.
The work plays with cargo traditions once central to the port, where goods arrived from distant regions. Visitors recognize in it a playful nod to the economic exchange that shaped the city.
The sculpture sits on the university campus and remains freely accessible at all times. Those who approach will find enough space for photographs and can view the work from several angles.
In 2008, 125 smaller replicas appeared throughout the city and were later auctioned to raise funds. The auction brought an average of 7,800 pounds per figure, supporting local projects.
