Thaxted, town in Essex, England

Thaxted is a small town in Essex located in a valley near the River Chelmer. The town is characterized by old stone houses from medieval and Tudor times, a large church in Perpendicular style with a spire reaching over 180 feet, a restored windmill built in 1810, and a historic guildhall from the 15th century.

Thaxted was established before the Domesday Book and has settlement traces from Bronze Age, Iron Age, and Roman times, including a Roman bronze head of Bacchus found there. In the Middle Ages the town developed into an important center for making knives, swords, and other metal tools, and composer Gustav Holst revived its musical scene through festivals in the early 20th century.

The name Thaxted comes from Old English words referring to a place where thatching materials were gathered. Today the town is known for its Morris dancers, traditional folk performers who dance in the streets during celebrations, and every year they host a special weekend where teams from across the region come to dance together.

The town is compact and easy to explore on foot, with old streets that wind naturally and reveal multiple points of interest. There are cafes and pubs throughout town where visitors can rest, plus a community information centre run by volunteers that provides leaflets and books about local history.

A Roman bronze head of Bacchus was found in Thaxted, connecting the town to the ancient world in an unexpected way. This discovery shows that the region was inhabited and linked to Roman culture thousands of years ago.
