Strata SE1, Residential skyscraper in Elephant and Castle, London, United Kingdom
Strata SE1 is a 43-floor residential tower about 147 meters tall in the Elephant and Castle area. The building features a dark aluminium facade with silver horizontal stripes, and three wind turbines are integrated into its roofline.
The building was completed between 2007 and 2010 and was London's first structure with integrated wind turbines. It replaced the Heygate Estate and provided housing for former residents of that neighbourhood.
The name Strata refers to the horizontal layers visible through the silver stripes on the dark facade. This design element shapes how the building appears and has become its defining visual feature in the area.
The building contains around 408 apartments, including affordable housing managed by a housing association. Visitors can explore the exterior and surrounding area to view the architectural design.
The three rooftop wind turbines were designed to generate eight percent of the building's energy needs but operated only partially due to noise complaints from penthouse residents. These machines remain visible despite not running as originally intended.
