Kingston upon Thames, Market town on River Thames in south-west London, England
This town sits about 10 miles from Charing Cross along the river and has pedestrian shopping streets plus a central market square. It combines older buildings with modern shopping centers and extends along both banks of the river, with bridges connecting the two sides.
Saxon rulers including Æthelstan and Æthelred received consecration here, as the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records from the tenth century. The royal charter granted in 1208 gave the settlement market rights and helped its growth as a trading center by the river.
Stations at Kingston and Surbiton offer rail links to London Waterloo in roughly 28 minutes, while over 40 bus routes reach the center. The market square and pedestrian zone are easy to navigate on foot and provide good landmarks for visitors.
During the twentieth century, important fighter aircraft including the Sopwith Camel and Hawker Hurricane were built here and served in both world wars. Aircraft production ended in 1992, but the industrial legacy remains part of local memory.
