Gloucestershire Airport, airport in the United Kingdom
Gloucestershire Airport is an airport in Gloucestershire, west of Cheltenham and near the M5, focused mainly on small aircraft and flight training. The site has two asphalt runways, hangars, maintenance facilities, and flight schools used daily for training flights and private aviation operations.
The airport began operations in 1931 as Down Hatherley and was later renamed after Staverton village, serving as RAF Staverton during World War II for pilot training. After the war, the site became a center for aircraft development and testing before taking its current name Gloucestershire Airport in 1993 to reflect its growing importance for business aviation.
The airport carries the historical name Staverton after a nearby village and is seen by the local community as a place where aviation enthusiasts and pilots gather. The informal atmosphere and regular flying activities have given the site its own identity, connected over the years with regional aviation culture.
The airport is easy to reach by car via the M5 (exits 10 and 11) or the A40, with parking near the terminal building and postcode GL51 6SR for navigation. A taxi from Gloucester takes about 15 minutes, from Cheltenham about 10 minutes, and bus line 94 runs every 10 minutes between Gloucester and Cheltenham with a stop about 900 meters from the entrance.
In 2014, the airport organized a community record event where nearly 15,000 cupcakes made by volunteers were arranged in a line stretching over 800 meters. This unusual occurrence raised funds for children's charities and showed how an airport can bring the local community together far beyond flying.
