Dinefwr Castle consists of medieval ruins perched on a hilltop within Dinefwr Park National Nature Reserve. The site overlooks 800 acres of rolling countryside dotted with ancient woodlands and the valley beyond.
The castle was founded by Rhodri the Great and served as the primary stronghold of the Kingdom of Deheubarth starting in the 9th century. Archaeological work has revealed Roman military occupation on the site dating to the first century, establishing much earlier defense activity.
The ruins display typical Welsh castle construction with circular towers and defensive walls that visitors can still see today. The location high above the Tywi Valley reveals why it was positioned to command the surrounding landscape.
The walk to the castle climbs through woodland on a moderate uphill path, so comfortable footwear is recommended. Guided tours run from March through November during daylight hours, though checking current conditions before your visit is helpful.
Ground radar surveys uncovered two Roman forts buried beneath the castle ruins. This discovery shows that the site was strategically important for defense long before the medieval structures were built.
