Duffus Castle, Medieval fortress in Moray, Scotland.
Duffus Castle features a rectangular stone keep positioned on an artificial mound, surrounded by a deep defensive ditch and curtain walls.
Flemish nobleman Freskin constructed the initial wooden castle in 1140, which later transformed into a stone structure during the early 14th century.
The castle represents the architectural evolution from wooden motte-and-bailey designs to stone fortifications common in medieval Scottish military construction.
Visitors can access the castle ruins daily through Historic Environment Scotland, with interpretative panels explaining the site's architectural features.
The stone keep experienced severe structural issues, causing the north wall to slide down the motte where its remains still rest today.
