Carra Castle

Carra Castle is a ruined tower house near Cushendun, built on a site where people worked with flint in prehistoric times. The stone walls remain visible today, though covered with ivy, and you can still make out its original square shape.

The tower was built by local clans to control this region and became a battleground between rival families fighting for power. It changed hands several times during the 1500s as different groups sought to dominate the area.

The castle shows how Irish clans used such places as power centers in this region. You can sense the importance of these strongholds in local life when walking through the ruins.

The ruins stand in an open field that you can reach on foot, though the ground can be wet and uneven underfoot. Wear sturdy shoes and allow time to walk around the walls, as vegetation can be thick around the structure.

The site witnessed dramatic moments between rival clans competing for control of this coastal region. These stories of power struggles and conflict remain part of what makes this spot memorable to visit.
