Carra Castle, Medieval castle near Cushendun, Northern Ireland
The castle structure features a square tower house built upon a Mesolithic flint working site near the harbor of Cushendun.
In 1567, Shane O'Neill met his end at Castle Carra when the McDonnells killed him after two days of hunting and feasting.
The castle reflects the complex relationships between Irish clans, as evidenced by the interactions between the O'Neills and McDonnells during the 16th century.
The ruins stand in a field accessible to visitors, with remnants of walls and architectural elements still visible despite extensive ivy growth.
The castle served as a temporary prison for Sorley Boy McDonnell in 1565, before his son later successfully defended it against English forces.
