Ynys Gifftan, Tidal island in Dwyryd Estuary, Wales.
Ynys Gifftan is a tidal island in the Dwyryd Estuary in Wales, rising approximately 38 meters above sea level. The rocky terrain supports the remains of an abandoned cottage that has sat empty since the mid-1960s.
The island was inhabited by a small community until the mid-1960s, when the final residents left. This departure marked the end of human settlement on what had been a precarious home.
The island once supported a small community whose rhythm followed the tides. Walking around today, you can sense how remote and self-contained life must have been in this place.
Access is only possible around low tide, with a window of about three hours before and after the water recedes. Check tide times carefully before visiting and allow plenty of time to return before the path floods again.
The route crosses two river channels and has no marked paths, requiring visitors to navigate by landmarks and careful observation. This demanding approach keeps the site relatively undisturbed and uncrowded.
