Ynys Lochtyn, Rock formation in Ceredigion, Wales
Ynys Lochtyn is a sandstone rock formation on the Ceredigion coast that rises steeply from the sea with sheer cliffs overlooking Cardigan Bay. The plateau top is covered with grass, and natural caves puncture the lower sections where waves meet the rocks.
This rock formation developed through natural geological processes over millions of years, and later came under protection as a Site of Special Scientific Interest by the National Trust. The protected status recognizes its value for understanding coastal geology.
Local climbing groups have developed numerous routes across the rock faces, adding names like Beaj Iskis and The Day the Balloon Went Up.
The site is reached via the Ceredigion Coast Path, but only safely accessible during low tide when the rocky approach is exposed. Plan your visit around tidal conditions to avoid getting cut off by rising water.
The waters surrounding this formation host the United Kingdom's largest bottlenose dolphin population. Visitors often spot these marine mammals moving through the bay from vantage points on the rocks.
