Chno Dearg, Mountain summit in Lochaber, Scotland
Chno Dearg is a mountain in the Scottish Highlands that rises to approximately 1,046 meters (3,432 feet) with a rounded summit dome. Steep rocky faces drop away on the eastern side, while a corrie system lies to the south.
The name originates from older maps that recorded it as 'Cnoc Dearg', a Gaelic term meaning red hill. The modern spelling 'Chno Dearg' eventually became the standard form used in contemporary references.
This mountain belongs to the category of Munros, the classification system for Scottish mountains exceeding 3,000 feet, central to Scottish mountaineering traditions.
The main approach begins from Fersit hamlet at lower elevation, while an alternative route starts from Corrour railway station serving hikers arriving by train. Either path allows climbers to connect with nearby peaks or return via different routes depending on fitness and preferences.
The northern slopes drop across several kilometers with a steep vertical descent, creating natural snow fields that attract ski mountaineers during winter. Few visitors realize how these slopes transform the peak into a destination for off-piste skiing rather than just walking routes.
