Springfield Park, Rugby league stadium in Wigan, England
Springfield Park is a former rugby league stadium in the centre of Wigan, England, with a main stand and several seating sections arranged around a grass pitch. The ground had separate entrances and facilities for home and away supporters, with capacity for around 12,000 spectators.
The ground opened in 1897 and was used for both football and rugby league in its early years. After more than a century of sporting use, it closed at the end of the 1990s and was later demolished.
Springfield Park was woven into the weekly routine of Wigan residents who gathered there to watch rugby league. The ground gave local supporters a shared space that felt genuinely connected to the town rather than just a sports facility.
The stadium stood close to Wigan town centre and was easy to reach on foot from the train station. The site has since been cleared, so there is nothing left to visit in person today.
Paul Dickov scored the last ever goal at the ground in 1999, just before it shut for good. It was an unexpected final act for a place that had hosted sport for well over a century.
