Hardraw Force is a waterfall in a wooded ravine featuring limestone formations, dropping about 100 feet in a single continuous stream. The site is accessed through a paid turnstile entrance behind the Green Dragon Inn, where pathways run along both sides of the water.
The waterfall sustained damage during an 1899 flood, after which its upper edge was reinforced with metal stakes for stability. These repairs helped protect the site for future generations to enjoy.
The ravine behind the Green Dragon Inn hosts an annual brass band competition each September, drawing musicians from across Northern England. This event has made the location a significant gathering place for the region's musical community.
Access is through a paid turnstile entrance behind the Green Dragon Inn, with pathways suitable for wheelchair users. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the paths can become slippery, especially after rain.
The turnstile system behind the Green Dragon Inn was created by the pub owner as a way to manage visitor access and collect fees fairly. This remains one of the few locations in the United Kingdom where this historic access method is still in regular use.
