Balloch Castle, Gothic country house near Loch Lomond, Scotland
Balloch Castle is a Gothic country house standing on a hill within a 200-acre estate on Loch Lomond's southeastern shore. The grounds feature formal gardens, woodland paths, and various areas designed for walking and outdoor exploration.
The original castle from 1238 served as a residence for the Lennox family until they relocated to Inchmurrin Island in 1390 for greater protection. The current Gothic structure was built in 1809 using stones from the medieval castle.
The grounds feature multiple themed gardens, including a Chinese Garden, Kitchen Garden, and Secret Garden, each reflecting different landscaping traditions. Visitors can walk through these distinct spaces and see how each garden is planted and designed with its own pathways and character.
The castle and grounds are open year-round with walking paths, children's play areas, and outdoor spaces along the lakeshore. Wear sturdy footwear since the paths cross varied terrain and conditions change with the seasons.
The architect Robert Lugar designed the current facade in 1809 by reusing stones from the demolished medieval castle. This recycling means portions of the building come from two different periods and were combined to form something new.
