Treborth Botanic Garden, Botanical garden near Menai Strait in Bangor, Wales.
Treborth Botanic Garden is a botanical garden near Bangor in Wales covering 18 hectares with six temperature-controlled glasshouses, native woodland, and species-rich grasslands along the waterfront. The different sections display a range of plant types from local and distant regions.
The garden was established in the 1840s by the Chester and Holyhead Railway Company as part of Britannia Park, with design support from Crystal Palace architect Joseph Paxton. The layout from that era still forms the foundation of the site today.
The garden functions as a learning space for Bangor University students, schools, and local groups who come to understand plant diversity and environmental conservation. Visitors experience firsthand how different habitats work and discover the role plants play in nature.
The outdoor areas are free to enter and open from sunrise to sunset, while the glasshouses are accessible during staffed hours. Visiting at different times of year reveals how the plants and landscapes change with the seasons.
The garden partners with botanical institutions in Lesotho and China, exchanging knowledge and plant species between continents. These international connections bring together tropical and mountain plants that would never naturally grow side by side.
