Ulster Museum, National museum in Botanic Gardens, Belfast, Northern Ireland
Ulster Museum contains several floors of galleries displaying paintings, archaeological finds, natural history collections and objects related to the history of Northern Ireland. The rooms combine modern architecture with older building sections and provide space for temporary exhibitions as well as permanent collections.
The institution began in 1821 as a natural history society and moved to its current site in Stranmillis in 1929. Since 1961 it has officially held the status of a national museum.
The museum displays numerous artifacts from Northern Ireland, including the Malone Hoard of Neolithic axe heads and Bronze Age jewelry from the Downpatrick collection.
The museum opens from Tuesday to Sunday between 10 and 17 o'clock and offers wheelchair access throughout. Exhibition rooms are located on several floors with lifts and ramps.
The botanical collection holds more than 100,000 dried plants from all parts of the world. The oldest specimen is an alga from 1798.
