County Lock, Navigation lock in Reading, United Kingdom
County Lock operates on the River Kennet with a minimal height difference of 30 centimeters between water levels upstream and downstream.
The first County Lock was constructed between 1718 and 1723 under engineer John Hore's supervision before relocating to its current position in 1876.
The lock area connects to Brewery Gut, where boats previously required special floating devices to navigate the narrow passage without a towpath.
Modern traffic lights control the boat movements through Brewery Gut, a 7.6-meter wide section that experiences strong water currents.
The former Simonds Brewery buildings near the lock have transformed into apartments and offices, preserving only the original stable structure.
