140–142 Hospital Street, Nantwich, Grade II listed house in Nantwich, England
140-142 Hospital Street is a timber-framed house with rendered walls and a tiled roof on Hospital Street in Nantwich. The building spans three bays across two stories with attic space above, and features original leaded glass windows displaying the coats of arms of the Crewe and Mainwaring families.
This house sits on the site of the medieval Hospital of St. Nicholas, founded in 1083 by William Malbank. The location was later converted into a private residence.
The Gothic doorway with its decorative molding shows how residential buildings were designed in Nantwich over centuries. The leaded glass windows with heraldic emblems tell of the families who made this their home.
The building is accessible from street level, and its distinctive windows can be viewed from outside. The best view of the exterior and leaded glass features is from Hospital Street itself.
During renovations in 1883, stone remains of a Norman doorway from the original hospital were discovered buried in the garden. This find reveals the deep history lying beneath the current structure.
