Brecon Mountain Railway, Heritage narrow-gauge railway in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales.
The Brecon Mountain Railway operates steam-hauled trains on a narrow-gauge track running through a mountain valley with two reservoirs visible along the route. The journey covers about five miles from a lower station at Pant through rising terrain to the Torpantau station at higher elevation.
This line follows the route of the former Brecon & Merthyr Railway, which operated between 1859 and 1964 to serve communities in the region. The railway experience as it exists today was revived in 1979 on the same historic route.
The locomotives and carriages reflect how steam power once connected remote Welsh communities in these mountains. Visitors experience how these machines shaped the way people traveled and worked in this region.
Services run most frequently during weekends and summer months, with operations available from February through December throughout the year. The station at Pant includes a café, shop, and parking area to make visiting straightforward.
The route climbs extremely steep gradients that require specially adapted locomotives to haul trains up the mountain without losing traction. This demanding terrain makes every journey a demonstration of how engineering overcame natural obstacles.
