The Exchange, Grade I listed building in Bristol, England
The Exchange is a Georgian Palladian building on Corn Street with Corinthian columns and a semicircular-arched doorway decorated with lion-head knockers. Today it holds office spaces and St Nicholas Market within the same structure.
John Wood the Elder built this structure between 1741 and 1743 as a trading hub for grain and goods in Bristol. Its completion marked an important moment in the city's commercial development.
Inside, four bronze tables called nails from earlier centuries sit where merchants once sealed their deals. These pieces still remind visitors of the trading traditions that shaped this place.
The building is easy to find in downtown Bristol and now combines office space with a working market. You can admire the Georgian architecture from outside and explore the adjacent market offerings.
A clock installed in 1822 displays both Greenwich Mean Time and Bristol local time side by side. This dual display reflects early efforts to reconcile standardized timekeeping with local practice.
