Aberystwyth Cliff Railway, Funicular railway in Aberystwyth, United Kingdom.
The Aberystwyth Cliff Railway is a funicular that climbs from the northern end of the seafront promenade up the steep slope of Constitution Hill. The two passenger cars travel along parallel tracks, hauling visitors to the hilltop and back with a simple mechanical pulley system.
The railway opened in 1896 using a water balance system to power its movement, but switched to electric motors in 1921 for more reliable service. This change allowed the operation to become more efficient and practical.
The summit features a camera obscura with a 14-inch lens, providing visitors with panoramic views spanning 1000 square miles of Welsh landscape and mountain peaks.
The railway operates year-round and visitors can either ride up or walk alongside the slope on the hillside path. Wear comfortable shoes if you plan to walk, as the hill becomes quite steep toward the top.
Three original wooden bridges from the first year of operation are still in active use, crossing over the tracks to preserve the Victorian walking paths on the hillside. They allow visitors to traverse the slope on foot without needing the funicular at all.
