46 High Street, Nantwich, Tudor merchant house in Nantwich, England
46 High Street is a timber-framed house with two gables, decorative paneling, and carved figures on its black-and-white exterior. The building now contains a bookshop and coffee establishment, allowing visitors to experience the interior spaces of this historical residence.
The house was commissioned by Thomas Churche in 1584 following the devastating fire of 1583 in Nantwich, partly funded through the town's reconstruction program. Its construction marks the town's recovery from this disaster and its rebuild as a prosperous trading center.
The building shows how wealthy merchants lived during the Elizabethan era when salt commerce shaped the region. The black-and-white timber exteriors and carved details reflect the prosperity that this trade brought to the town.
The building is accessible to visitors through its bookshop and cafe business, making it easy to explore the historic interiors. Its location on High Street makes it straightforward to visit and find.
Archaeological excavations revealed the building stands on unconsolidated ground and contained numerous artifacts beneath it. Items discovered such as embroidered fabric and leather shoe laces provide insight into the daily life of its former inhabitants.
