Alexandra Road Estate, Brutalist residential complex in Camden, England
Alexandra Road Estate is a housing complex in the London Borough of Camden in England. Three parallel concrete structures run along a railway line, with the highest block designed as a stepped noise barrier rising eight stories.
The complex was built between 1972 and 1978 following architect Neave Brown's plans as an alternative to conventional tower blocks. In 1993, the development became the first postwar housing project to receive Grade II* listed status, recognizing its architectural importance.
The apartments are organized around a car-free central street that serves as a shared access route for residents. Children play in traffic-calmed areas between buildings while adults use communal terraces and gardens built into the structure.
The complex sits beside railway tracks and is accessible through several entry points from the street side. Visitors should remember this is a residential neighborhood where respect for residents' privacy is expected.
The highest apartments sit on the eighth floor and feature private rooftop terraces with direct views across the city. These upper units were designed as two-level maisonettes connected by internal staircases.
