Annabel's, Private members nightclub in Berkeley Square, Mayfair, United Kingdom
Annabel's occupies four floors of a Georgian townhouse at 46 Berkeley Square and includes several restaurants, bars, garden terraces and private dining rooms. The interiors combine dark wood panelling, velvet furniture and contemporary artworks within a layout that respects the original structure of the building.
Mark Birley founded the club in 1963 in a basement coal cellar and named it after his wife, gathering 500 founding members. In 2018 the operation moved from the cellar into the entire building on Berkeley Square, expanding the space considerably.
At night the rooms fill with guests from finance, fashion and creative industries who meet over dinner or dance until the early hours. The name comes from Lady Annabel Vane-Tempest-Stewart, the founder's first wife, and underlines the social character of the venue.
Anyone wishing to enter must submit an application reviewed by a committee and once accepted follow a strict dress code. Membership grants access to all rooms and allows guests to be brought along under certain rules.
The women's powder room draws attention with pink onyx washbasins shaped like shells, mirrored walls and floral ceiling decorations that are often shared on social media. The room was designed to recall an 18th-century grotto and blends historical references with contemporary aesthetics.
