All Cannings Cross, Archaeological site and scheduled monument in All Cannings, England
All Cannings Cross is an archaeological site and protected monument in the Vale of Pewsey region, where excavations revealed thick layers of soil containing concentrations of pottery, animal bones, and bronze and iron tools from ancient settlements. The location sits approximately 244 meters northeast of Cannings Cross Farm and is accessible via designated pathways.
The site became known in 1911 when archaeologists Ben and Maud Cunnington discovered numerous hammerstones in a ploughed field in the Vale of Pewsey. This systematic investigation proved essential in identifying early Iron Age technology across Britain.
The pottery fragments show advanced craftsmanship from the 8th to 7th century BC, with vessels featuring smooth surfaces that resemble bronze. These objects reveal how people at that time shaped everyday items with remarkable care.
Access is on foot via pathways leading to the protected grounds, with visits best planned during clear weather. Understanding the excavation depth and exposed layers is enhanced by taking time to explore the site carefully.
This location was remarkable as the first place in Britain where researchers systematically documented early Iron Age technology through careful excavation. This pioneering work set a standard for archaeological methods in the region.
