Ashwell Springs

Ashwell Springs is a protected area containing several freshwater sources that mark the beginning of the River Cam in Hertfordshire. The 0.3-hectare site features spring pools that form the natural starting point for this important waterway.

The springs received protected status in 1986 when Natural England designated them as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. This official recognition acknowledged the ecological importance of the location.

The springs draw visitors interested in seeing where a major river begins its flow. Local walkers use the site to experience the natural landscape of this part of Hertfordshire.

The site is accessible from the High Street entrance or by following the dedicated walking path from Hodwell. Wear sturdy footwear since the ground around the springs remains damp year-round.

The cold spring pools here support rare flatworm species including Crenobia alpina and Polycelis felina that require extremely cool water. These organisms serve as indicators of the water quality at this source.
