Ashwell Springs, Freshwater springs at Ashwell, England
The 0.3-hectare protected area contains several freshwater springs that form the source of the River Cam in Hertfordshire.
Natural England designated this location as a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1986 to protect its biological characteristics.
Research teams regularly study the spring pools to monitor rare invertebrate populations and document changes in the aquatic ecosystem.
Visitors can reach the springs through the High Street entrance or by following the dedicated footpath from Hodwell.
The cold spring pools create a specific environment for flatworms, including Crenobia alpina and Polycelis felina species.
