Astley and Bedford Mosses

Astley and Bedford Mosses is a protected peat bog covering roughly 92 hectares in Wigan with diverse plant and animal species. The wetland contains specialized mosses, sedges, and numerous bird species within its natural habitat.

The site gained protection in 1989 when Natural England designated it as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. This recognition established formal conservation measures to safeguard the ecological value of the peatland.

The site serves as a learning space where visitors can observe how specialized plants and mosses thrive in wetland conditions. People come here to understand how peatlands function as living ecosystems rather than empty wastelands.

Visitors can walk along designated paths throughout the site while spotting birds and observing native plants. Wear sturdy footwear since the ground is wet and soft in many areas.

The peat bog stores carbon in layers of organic matter that have built up over thousands of years. This natural carbon storage makes the site scientifically valuable in understanding how peatlands help regulate climate.
