Baitings Reservoir, reservoir in West Yorkshire, England, UK
Baitings Reservoir is a water reservoir in a valley near Ripponden in West Yorkshire, managed by Yorkshire Water. It sits among open moorland and patches of woodland that line its banks.
The reservoir was completed in the mid-20th century to supply water to communities across Yorkshire. Before it was built, the valley held farmland and small settlements that were flooded when the dam was finished.
The name reflects historical land use in the area. Today, locals and visitors use the paths for walking and quietly observing the natural surroundings.
Free parking is available on the northeast side near the dam wall, reached from the A58 toward Rochdale. Swimming is not allowed, dogs must stay on a lead, and lighting fires is not permitted anywhere around the water.
When the water level drops very low during dry periods, the remains of the old farmsteads flooded to create the reservoir can reappear above the surface. These submerged traces of former life are rarely visible and draw curious visitors when they emerge.
