Admiral Hood Monument, Naval monument in Butleigh, England
Admiral Hood Monument is a 110-foot tall Tuscan column on a square plinth located in Butleigh, Somerset. Its summit features stone carvings depicting warships from the Napoleonic era.
Architect Henry Goodridge designed this Grade II* listed structure in 1831 to honor Sir Samuel Hood, who commanded HMS Zealous at the Battle of the Nile. It stands as a memorial to this significant naval figure.
The monument's inscriptions were written by Sir James Mackintosh and recount Samuel Hood's accomplishments during his naval career. They transform the structure into a place where visitors can read about the life and service of this important maritime figure.
The monument is accessible via a public footpath from Collard Hill, which follows the ridge of the Polden Hills through woodland. The walk offers views across the surrounding landscape and involves moderate hiking.
The structure was originally linked to the Hood family residence by a mile-long avenue of cedar trees that created a ceremonial approach. This grand pathway was designed as an act of reverence toward the honored naval figure.
