Alyn Gorge, Natural gorge in Loggerheads, Wales
Alyn Gorge is a limestone valley carved by the River Alyn, with tall cliffs rising on the east side and gradual slopes descending on the west. Underground cave systems such as Ogof Hesp Alyn lie beneath the valley floor, forming a hidden network of passages.
Mining for lead, zinc, and limestone shaped the gorge from the 1800s onward, with tram lines built across the slopes to transport materials. Industrial changes to water levels eventually revealed underground cave systems that had remained hidden.
The river and cave networks below ground draw visitors interested in geology and natural exploration. Local communities value the site as an important area for scientific study and outdoor recreation.
Paths along the gorge are maintained with metal bridges and safety railings at key viewpoints. Sturdy shoes are recommended as the ground can be uneven and slippery after rain.
Near Cilcain, the river water disappears underground into hidden channels that form an entire subterranean river system beneath the valley. This hidden transformation of the visible waterway is one of the most unusual features visitors encounter.
