Ariconium, Roman archaeological site in Weston under Penyard, England
Ariconium is a Roman settlement site near Ross on Wye with visible remains of buildings, streets, and structures from ancient times. The layout shows how the community was organized, with evidence of residential areas and industrial zones spread across the landscape.
This settlement began as a Roman road station that served as a trading post and administrative center. Around 360 AD, the community was suddenly abandoned, marking the end of organized Roman presence in this area.
Iron working was central to daily life here during Roman times. The furnaces and forges that archaeologists uncovered reveal how important metalwork was to the settlement's economy.
The site is protected as a scheduled monument and remains on private land, so visiting requires permission or coordination with local heritage groups. Before traveling, contact the organizations managing the area to arrange suitable access times.
Large refuse heaps across the site have preserved countless artifacts, pottery, and coins over the centuries. These mounds contain a rare mix of pre-Roman British and Roman objects that tell the story of the region before and after Roman arrival.
